Okay, so I’ve been wanting to keep my teapot warm for longer, especially now that it’s getting colder. I hate it when my tea gets cold too fast! So I decided to make a hot pad, specifically for my teapot. I’m not a super crafty person, but this seemed easy enough.

First, I gathered my materials. I had some leftover fabric scraps from an old project – a thick, cotton-like material. I figured that would be good for insulation. I also needed some batting. I didn’t have any actual batting, so I used a few layers of an old, clean towel. That’s what makes up the inside and gives the insulation. I also got my scissors, pins, a needle, and thread. Basic sewing stuff.
The Process
- I cut two circles out of the fabric. I just eyeballed it, making them a couple of inches bigger than the base of my teapot. No need for perfection here!
- Then, I cut out the same size circles from my makeshift towel batting. I used about three layers of the towel.
- Next, I pinned one fabric circle (right side up) to the batting layers. Then, I pinned the other fabric circle on top (right side down), so the “good” sides of the fabric were facing each other. It’s like a fabric-batting-fabric sandwich.
- I sewed around the edge, leaving a small gap of about 2 inches. This is important because you need to turn it inside out! I used a simple running stitch, nothing fancy.
- I carefully turned the whole thing inside out through the gap. This was a bit fiddly, but I got there. Once it was turned right-side out, the batting was inside, and the fabric was on the outside, with the nice sides showing.
- I poked out the corners with a pencil to make them nice and round.
- Last Step, I folded the edges of the gap inwards and sewed it shut. Again, a simple running stitch.
And that’s it! I placed my teapot on the new hot pad, and it really does help keep the tea warm for longer. It’s not going to keep it piping hot for hours, but it definitely makes a difference. Plus, it looks kinda cute, which is a bonus. I’m pretty happy with how it turned out, especially since it was so easy to make!
