I’ve been wanting to make a scalloped tea cup for a while now, and I finally got around to it! It was a lot easier than I thought it would be, and I’m so happy with how it turned out. I thought I would share my whole process here because it’s super easy.
Getting Started
I started with a plain white porcelain tea cup. They are easy to find, you know. Then I got some porcelain paints. You can use any colors you want, but I went with a classic light pink and white for the scallops. I also grabbed a few small paintbrushes and a pencil.
The Process
First, I lightly sketched out the scallop pattern around the rim of the cup with a pencil. I just eyeballed it, nothing too fancy. You know, just make sure the scallops are roughly the same size. You can use some round stuff to trace if you’re not comfortable doing it freehand, but hey, imperfections add character, right?
Next, I carefully painted the scallops. This part took a bit of patience. I started with the pink, painting every other scallop. I made sure to follow the pencil lines I drew earlier, but it’s totally fine if it’s not perfect. Just go slow and steady. After the pink scallops dried, I went in with the white and painted the remaining ones. I let the whole thing dry completely. It takes a bit, but you gotta be patient, or you’ll smudge all your hard work.
Finishing Up
Once the paint was dry, I was actually done. This is the easiest craft I’ve ever done, man. To make the paint permanent, you usually need to bake the cup in the oven. I just followed the instructions on the paint I bought, it was super easy. The instructions said to bake it at 300F for about 35 minutes, but make sure you check your paint’s instructions because it might be different.
I’m so stoked about how this turned out! It looks so elegant and pretty. It’s definitely going to be my go-to cup for my afternoon tea from now on. I’m already thinking about making a matching saucer!
