Okay, so I’ve been getting into collecting vintage teacups lately, and I stumbled upon these “Bavaria” teacups. I had to figure out what the deal was with them, so here’s my journey.

Digging into “Bavaria”
First, I searched online. It turns out, “Bavaria” isn’t a brand, it is a region in Germany, like a state, I think. And this area has been making porcelain for, like, ever. So, a “Bavaria” teacup just means it was made in that region.
Checking Out Makers Marks
The real key, I found out, is to look at the marks on the bottom of the cups. I started by examining a few I had. They had different stamps, some with crowns, some with initials, and some with, what are those… shields? Those marks apparently tell you which specific company in Bavaria made the teacup.
It’s a real rabbit hole! I spent hours online, finding that some marks that are super well-known, mean the cups are worth more.
Figuring Out the Age
Next, I wanted to know how old my cups were. That’s another tricky part, the information told me. The style of the mark, plus things like the shape of the cup and the kind of decoration, all give you clues. I learned that some really old ones have hand-painted designs, while newer ones might have, I don’t know what they called decals?
- I compared my cups to pictures online.
- I focused on the tiny details, like the gold trim. Is it worn? How thick is it?
- I even tried to match the flower patterns to ones in online guides. It’s like detective work!
My “Bavaria” Teacup Collection So Far
Right now, I have a few cups. My first one has a mark that says “PM Bavaria.” After some online sleuthing, I think it was made by a company called, oh, what was that name? Moschendorf, maybe? It’s got a pretty floral pattern, and the gold is a little faded. So, based on my notes, I’m guessing it’s from the early 1900s. That’s so long ago!

My second cup, which I found in a thrift store, is more of a mystery. The mark is just a crown with some letters I can’t make out. So,I need to do more research on that one.
What’s Next
Honestly, I’m hooked! I’m going to keep hunting for more Bavaria teacups and keep learning about the different makers and their marks. I want to find a really old one someday, maybe even one from the 1800s! And I am also thinking about displaying them nicely.
This whole thing has been a surprise. It’s not just about the teacups, it’s about the history and the craftsmanship. I never thought I could get into a hobby like this, but it is kind of cool, you know?
