Alright folks, let me tell you about my little project – making insulated tea cups! It all started last week when I burned my tongue (again!) on some scalding hot tea. I thought, “There has to be a better way!” So, I decided to try and make my own insulated cups.

First things first, I hit up the local craft store. I grabbed a couple of plain ceramic mugs – nothing fancy, just your basic white ones. Then I picked up some cork sheets, the kind you’d use for bulletin boards. I figured cork would be a good, natural insulator. I also snagged some heavy-duty glue that was supposed to be heat-resistant.
Okay, so step one was measuring. I carefully measured the circumference and height of the mugs. Then, I cut the cork sheets to size. I wanted the cork to cover most of the mug, leaving a little lip at the top for comfortable sipping.
Next came the messy part – gluing! I spread a thin, even layer of glue on the back of the cork and carefully wrapped it around the mug. This was trickier than it looked! The cork kept wanting to slide around. I used some painter’s tape to hold it in place while the glue dried. I probably used about 3 rolls of tape.
I let the glue dry overnight. The next day, I peeled off the tape. Things were looking…okay. The cork was definitely stuck on there, but the seams weren’t perfect. There were a few gaps and some gluey bits showing. It wasn’t exactly professional-looking, but hey, it was my first try!
To try and clean it up I sanded down the edges. Big mistake. Cork bits everywhere!

Now for the heat test. I poured some boiling water into one of my newly insulated mugs and, you know what? It actually worked! The outside of the mug was warm, but not burning hot. I could comfortably hold it without needing a towel or anything.
The tea stayed hot for a decent amount of time, too. Maybe not as long as a fancy vacuum-insulated tumbler, but definitely longer than a regular mug. I was pretty pleased with myself.
The second mug, I decided to try something different. Instead of one big sheet of cork, I cut the cork into strips and wrapped them around the mug like a spiral. It took longer, but the seams were much cleaner. Plus, it looked kind of cool, like a little cork-wrapped sculpture.
Lessons Learned:
- Use better glue! The stuff I used worked, but it was messy and took forever to dry.
- Measure twice, cut once. Seriously.
- Don’t be afraid to experiment. The cork strips looked way better than the single sheet.
Would I do it again? Probably! It was a fun little project, and now I have two unique, insulated tea cups that I made myself. They’re not perfect, but they’re mine, and they keep my tea hot(ish) without burning my hands. Maybe next time I will just buy a cup next time. Jokes aside, it’s always fun to get your hands dirty and make something yourself!
